Hooking an Elm Grove well house up to the mains

Connecting to municipal water in Elm Grove is a choice, and only properties along certain roads have it. If yours does and you are weighing it, the water at your tap would change from your own well’s to Brookfield’s, and a softener has to be sized for whichever one you end up drinking.

Is the choice yours to make?

The Village says the mains reach only properties next to specific roads. If your road is not one of them, the question does not come up. If it is, connecting is voluntary, not required.

The Village’s Municipal Water page is the place to start, and the Village, not a softener company, can tell you whether your property can connect and what it involves.

What would arrive at your tap

Connected houses draw from Brookfield’s municipal wells. That is groundwater, not lake water, and Brookfield publishes its hardness at 23 to 34 grains per gallon, every bit of it inside the USGS very hard band.

So connecting changes where your water comes from, not whether it is hard. Your well may read above or below Brookfield’s range, and until it is measured, nobody can say which.

What it means for a softener

A softener works from the hardness figure it is given. The day the connection goes live, a unit set for your well is set for water the house no longer uses, and a system sized today for the well may not suit Brookfield’s water.

If you already own a softener, its setting has to follow the new number, and the replacement page covers swapping out an older unit. If you are buying one, the order matters.

Hookup first, or softener first?

If you expect to connect, it usually makes sense to price the system for the supply you will be on. Say on the call that the house is on a well today and that a hookup is planned or being considered, and the quote is built around that.

On install day the plumber reads the hardness at your tap before any pipe is touched, so the softener is set from the water actually arriving, whichever side of the hookup the house is on when the work happens.

If the hookup is still undecided, waiting is perfectly reasonable. A softener sized for water you may not keep is the one outcome worth avoiding.

Common questions

Will connecting make my water softer?

Not necessarily. Brookfield’s published range is 23 to 34 grains, which is very hard. Whether that is above or below your well depends on your well’s own number.

Do I need a new softener after connecting?

Not automatically. An existing unit has to be set for the new water, and whether to replace it is your decision. The call can talk it through, and nobody comes out to look.

Who do I ask about connecting?

The Village of Elm Grove. Its Municipal Water page explains the service, and the decision about your property rests with the Village and with you.
