Replacing the softener in an Elm Grove home

Every softener in Elm Grove is working on one of two waters: Brookfield’s municipal supply at a published 23 to 34 grains, or a private well that nobody publishes figures for. Knowing which one yours sits on is the first step in replacing it.

Did your supply change after the old softener went in?

Connecting is voluntary, so a house can move from its own well to the municipal line at any point. If yours made that move after the old softener went in, that softener was set up for different water than you have today.

Say which supply you are on now when you call, and the new one is sized for that.

Why an old setting may not carry over

A softener set up for one well has no reason to suit another, and one set up for a well may not suit the Brookfield line. That is why the new one is sized from the water the house has now, not from the old unit’s setting.

What to share about the old unit

Where it sits, how the water reaches it, and how big your household is. On a well, add any lab results, and the iron figure if the report has one. If you know roughly when it went in, and whether the house was on a well at the time, that helps too.

Swapping the units on install day

The plumber disconnects the existing softener and takes it out ahead of the new equipment. If the old spot is at the water’s entry point with a drain and an outlet nearby, the new one can go right there.

The rest follows the usual order: the bypass hooked up, the drain line discharging across an air gap, the RO drinking faucet mounted on the kitchen sink, and rechecks at your faucet until hardness shows zero.

Common questions

Is the RO faucet part of a replacement too?

Yes. The RO drinking faucet on the kitchen sink is bundled with each whole-home softener, replacement or not, and it is never a stand-alone purchase.

What happens to my old softener?

The plumber disconnects it and takes it out on install day, before the new system goes in.

I hooked up to the municipal water after my softener went in. Does that matter?

It can. The old unit was working on well water. The new one is sized for Brookfield’s published 23 to 34 grains and your household.
